Floor Preparation for Screeding in London & the South East

O. C. Floor Screeding has a wealth of knowledge, built on over 30 years in the industry, to advise you on the most efficient floor preparation for your project. Getting the base right is essential for a screed that performs as it should.

Our screeders are trained and experienced in the correct application of primers, damp proof membranes, insulation and sealers, and we prepare floors for domestic and commercial projects across London and the South East.

Because we handle the floor preparation as well as the screeding, one team takes responsibility for the whole floor, from the base up to the finished surface.

WHAT DOES FLOOR PREPARATION INVOLVE?

Primers bond the screed to the base, whether that is concrete, polythene or metal. Damp proof membranes separate the screed or insulation from the concrete base and prevent rising damp. Insulation reduces heat and noise loss, which matters because 15 to 20% of household heat loss is through the floor. Sealers dust-proof or harden a screed that is left as a wearing surface.

FAQs

What is a screed primer used for?

Primers bond the screed to the existing base, whether that is a concrete structure, polythene or metal. There is a wide range of primers available for different screed systems and bases.

Do I need a damp proof membrane under my screed?

DPMs are generally used to separate the screed or insulation from the concrete base and prevent rising damp. They are usually polythene sheeting laid before the screed and insulation, although liquid DPMs are available for specific situations.

Why is floor insulation important?

Insulation prevents thermal and acoustic loss. Around 15 to 20% of all household heat loss is through the floor, so getting the insulation right makes a real difference.

Can insulation reduce the depth of screed needed?

Yes. Polystyrene or EPS insulation can be used in some situations to reduce the depth of the screed, which can save costs.

Why does insulation need to be laid carefully?

Insulation must be laid without gaps or movement, otherwise it can affect the performance of a floating screed and the floor as a whole.

When is a sealer used?

Sealers are applied directly to the screeded floor to dust-proof or harden it, usually where the screed is left as a wearing surface with no floor finish.
